I know its a big call. And i'm a HUGE Jay Dee fan. But a few years back when I was visiting family in Cape Town, a friend of mine gave me a CD called "Cape Of Good Dope" covering the emerging South African hip hop scene. It totally blew my mind, and it started my now total obsession with African hip hop. We're not talking your typical Kwaito house beats. It's a hip hop style that is unique in itself. I came across a group from Cape Town - named Writers Block - and an EP titled "Brainstorm Promo" which has some dope tracks, one being "The Onus"
One producer in particular from Writers Block who caught my attention, Arsenic aka The Jazzy Mongrel, writes some absolute killer beats. On his latest installment, The Toke EP, contains a few instrumentals and Arsenic collaborating with local MCs and DJs and features some of Cape Town's illest emerging talent; Archetypes, Fungus, Endz The Otherness, Eavesdrop, Jitsvinger, and Big Dre contributing cuts and scratches. It's total ear candy.
